BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's cross country team placed fourth out of eight teams overall and out-paced all the non-Division I teams at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday evening.
Wake Forest claimed the team title with 30 points, while the Hokies finished second, just one point back (31). Radford was third with 100 points and W&L posted 114 points for fourth-place. Division II University of Charleston was fifth with 167 points.
Elise Wright of Wake Forest won the 4K race, crossing the finish line in 13:51.4. Sophomore Sara Stephenson (Weston, Mass. / The Rivers School) was the top General in the race, finishing 23rd overall out of the 85 runners that completed the race with a time of 14:56.0.
A trio of W&L runners crossed the finish line in succession led by senior Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo. / Ralston Valley), who was 29th in 15:21.4. Junior Katie Harris (Ashburn, Va. / Rock Ridge) placed 30th with a 15:24.6 and first-year Carolyn Todd (Cumberland Foreside, Maine / Greely) finished 31st (15:25.8).
Other runners for W&L included sophomore Avery Schiffman (New Vernon, N.J. / The Pingry School), first-year Parker Hawk (Dallas, Texas / The Hockaday School) and classmate Nina Gallagher (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy). Schiffman crossed the line in 15:27.7 for 34th, Hawk finished 39th with a 15:41.1 and Gallagher placed 42nd with a 15:59.0. The course at the Virginia Tech meet was slightly different than in year's past due to construction, which led to runners finished on average with slower times by about eight seconds.
Washington and Lee will return to action next Saturday when it participates in the ODAC Championship Preview held at Greenhill Park in Salem, Va. The women's race begins at 10:20 am.
