W&L Women's Cross Country Picked First in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2019 women's cross country preseason coaches' poll on Thursday, and four-time defending conference champion Washington and Lee secured the top spot out of 13 schools with 142 points and 10 first-place votes.

Lynchburg garnered the final three first-place votes and was second in the poll with 131 points. Bridgewater was third with 119 points, while Shenandoah was slotted fourth with 106 points. Eastern Mennonite completed the Top 5 with 92 points.

Roanoke took the sixth spot with 88 points, and Virginia Wesleyan (78 points) was seventh. Emory & Henry (65 points), Randolph (54 points), Guilford (43 points), Hollins (37 points), Sweet Briar (37 points) and Ferrum (22 points) rounded out the poll.

The Generals bring back 17 runners from last season's championship squad, adding six newcomers to the mix. W&L returns three All-ODAC honorees from last season, including first-team recipient senior Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley), and last year's ODAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Sarah Hollen (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area). Senior Julia Moody (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) also collected second team all-league laurels a season ago.

W&L opens the 2019 season on Friday, August 30 at the Bridgewater Cross Country Challenge at 5:00 pm.
