No. 29 W&L Women's Cross Country Places Fourth at Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Competing against Division I and Division II programs, the 29th-ranked Washington and Lee women's cross country team finished fourth out of five teams at the Hokie Invite on Friday. The Generals finished with the same team score as the schools that finished second and third but lost both tiebreakers to take fourth.

Virginia Tech placed first at the race with 15 points. Radford, VMI and W&L each totaled 80 points. Radford claimed second after winning both head-to-head tiebreakers, VMI came in third and W&L was fourth.

Senior Katie Kennedy of Virginia Tech was the individual winner on the 4k course. She crossed the finish line in 14:53.00. Junior Kirsten McMichael (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) led the Generals by placing 15th out of 51 runners in 15:12.70. Sophomore Julia Moody (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) was right behind her in 16th with a time of 15:13.10.

Junior Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) claimed 19th in 15:18.40, and first-year Anna Nelson (Arvada, Colo./Standley Lake) finished 21st (15:20.20). First-year Katie Harris (Ashburn, Va./Rock Ridge) rounded out the scoring in 24th with a time of 15:34.10.  

With it being the opening race of the season, the Blue and White held out some of its top runners. The team stayed as a group, focusing on tempo, through the first two miles of the competition, before moving up considerably over the final stretch of the course.

The Generals return to action on Friday, September 15, when they compete at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational.
