W&L Volleyball Upended by Southern Virginia, 3-2

LEXINGTON, Va. — Trailing 13-11 in the fifth set, Southern Virginia scored four straight points to upend the Washington and Lee volleyball team on Saturday in the final match of the W&L Invitational. The 3-2 victory was the first for the Knights (5-3) over the Generals in 23 contests.  

The Generals (6-1) took the first set, 25-11, but SVU claimed the second, 25-23. In the third, the Blue and White appeared to regain control by winning the stanza, 25-20, but Southern Virginia answered with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.

The two squads traded points in the fifth with the set tied, 10-10, after 20 points, but then back-to-back attack errors by SVU gave W&L a 12-10 advantage. Following a timeout by the Knights, an attack error by the Generals pulled Southern Virginia back to within one, 12-11. SVU immediately gave the point back on a service error (13-11).

The Knights used their final timeout of the match, and then junior middle blocker Taryn Warner put her team on her back. She notched a kill to pull SVU to within one, 13-12, and then she had a combination block with junior setter Elle Warnick to tie the score (13-13). 

Warner registered a solo block to give the Knights a 14-13 advantage, and closed out the match with a kill to push SVU to the 15-13 set win.

Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the Blue and White with 16 kills and 20 digs. Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) added 15 kills and four blocks. Following the conclusion of the match, Gould and Berry were both named to the W&L Invitational All-Tournament Team. 

Senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) had 41 assists, 10 digs and six kills. Sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) totaled 13 kills, while first-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) chipped in 15 digs. 

SVU junior outside hitter Kaely Rath led all players with 17 kills, while Warner finished with nine kills and four blocks. Warnick totaled 43 assists, 11 digs and four kills. Senior libero Mykynli Knight registered a match-high 29 digs. 

The Generals open ODAC play on Wednesday at Lynchburg at 6:30 pm.
