LEXINGTON, Va. — The second-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team registered a .302 hitting percentage on its way to a 3-0 sweep of seventh-seeded Guilford in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
With the set tied, 4-4, in the first, the Generals (19-12) went on a 5-0 run, which included two kills from sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), to take a 9-4 advantage. The Quakers (16-10) trimmed the deficit to 11-7, but W&L answered by winning six of the next seven rallies to grab a 17-8 lead. The Blue and White eventually took the set, 25-15.
In the second, the Generals created early separation in the stanza when they turned a 5-3 margin into an 11-4 lead, following a 6-1 spurt. Sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the run with three kills. W&L stretched the advantage to 11 (19-9) before claiming the set, 25-17.
The squads were tied, 7-7, in the third, but five straight points by W&L, which were aided by three attack errors for Guilford, stretched the margin to 12-7. The Quakers cut the gap to one, 15-14, but the Blue and White responded with a 6-2 run to take a 21-16 lead en route to winning the set, 25-17.
The Generals totaled 42 kills on 96 attempts with just 13 errors to record its .302 hitting percentage. W&L held Guilford to a -.009 hitting percentage (23 kills, 24 errors & 111 attempts).
Gould totaled a match-high 11 kills and added six digs. Junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had eight kills, and Berry notched seven kills on a .357 hitting percentage to go with three blocks.
Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) led the back row with 13 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) tallied four kills, five blocks and three digs. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) contributed 35 assists and seven digs. With her 13 digs, Cosgrove pushed her season total to 504, which is the fourth-best single-season total in program history. Lauren Edmonson '07 is third on the single-season list with 511.
Junior outside hitter Christian Ritter led Guilford with eight kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Tina Eucker had 20 assists.
The Generals advance the the ODAC Tournament semifinals, and will play third-seeded Bridgewater at Randolph-Macon with the match time to be announced.
