Guignon Leads W&L Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep of EMU

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) notched 15 kills on a .464 hitting percentage to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.

The Generals (14-9, 8-1 ODAC) put the pressure on the Royals (7-16, 2-6 ODAC) early in the first set, registering 18 of the first 21 points to take an 18-3 lead. EMU finally found consistent offense in the stanza, but W&L held on for a 25-15 win.

The two squads went back and forth in the second, with the Blue and White holding an 18-16 edge following a kill by EMU junior outside hitter Meredith Stinnette. A kill by sophomore middle blocker Madeline Ferguson (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) started a 3-0 mini run for the Generals, which allowed the team to eventually claim the set, 25-21.

In the third, the score was tied, 3-3, but a 7-1 spurt, capped on a kill by junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot), gave the Blue and White a 10-4 advantage. W&L stretched the lead to 19-9, before closing out the match, 25-13, on a combined block from first-year outside hitter Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle).

For the match, the Generals notched a .404 hitting percentage with 43 kills and seven errors on 89 attempts. EMU hit just .108 with 27 kills and 17 errors on 93 attempts.

Guignon needed just 28 attempts with only two errors for her 15 kills. She also had 11 digs and two assists. Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) totaled a match-high 18 digs to lead the back row.

Meade had eight kills on 13 swings (.615 hitting percentage), and junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) chipped in six kills on 13 attempts (.462 hitting percentage), to go along with five service aces. Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tallied 33 assists, six digs, two aces and three kills.

Senior middle blocker Maria Yoder led the Royals with six kills on a .545 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Carly Gingerich had 15 assists and six digs.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Hollins at 11:00 am and Virginia Wesleyan at 3:30 pm. W&L will honor its three seniors before the Hollins match.
