WINCHESTER, Va. — Sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) totaled 13 kills on a .458 hitting percentage to power the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Shenandoah on Tuesday to open ODAC play for both teams.
The Generals (3-5, 1-0 ODAC) dropped the first set, 25-20. With W&L leading 11-9 in the second over the Hornets (1-5, 0-1 ODAC), the Blue and White tallied seven straight points, highlighted by two kills from Gould, to take a commanding 18-9 advantage in the stanza. The Generals went on to claim the second, 25-16.
W&L carried its momentum over to the third, which included a 7-0 run midway through the set, en route to a 25-13 victory in the stanza. In the fourth, the Generals held an 11-8 edge, and then finished the set on a 14-8 spurt to close out the match.
Gould needed just 24 attempts to register her 13 kills with just two errors. She also added eight digs and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) notched 10 kills and five digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) was all over the court on Tuesday. She had six blocks, 19 digs, four kills and four assists. Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) registered 19 digs. Junior setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) tallied a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs.
The Generals return to action next Wednesday, September 19, at home against Guilford at 7:00 pm.
