BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) totaled a season-high 13 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team past Sewanee, 3-0, on Saturday at the Birmingham Southern McAttack Bash.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening set, with the Generals (2-1) pulling away over the last 12 points to take the first, 25-19. W&L jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second, and then scored 10 of the next 12 points to grab a 21-6 advantage. Gould notched three kills during the spurt.
The Tigers (0-2) attempted a rally late in the set but ultimately W&L claimed the second, 25-15. The Blue and White made quick work of Sewanee in the third, scoring 15 of the first 20 points on its way to a 25-10 victory in the set to finish off the match.
Gould registered a .414 hitting percentage, needing only 29 attempts with one error to tally her 13 kills. She also had five digs. Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) added seven kills and six digs.
Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) notched 18 digs, pushing her career total to 1,108. She is now 10th on the W&L all-time list, passing Lindsay Ruckert '02 who finished with 1,105. Laura Maurer '09 is ninth all-time with 1,109 digs.
Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) recorded 10 digs and nine assists, and sophomore setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) had 12 assists. W&L had a .284 hitting percentage for the contest with 39 kills on 102 attempts with only 10 errors.
The Tigers struggled to attack effectively, registering a hitting percentage of .071. The squad had 24 kills on 98 attempts with 17 errors. First-year outside hitter Destiny Stewart led the team with 11 kills and 11 digs, and junior defensive specialist Peyton Parent added 13 digs.
The Generals finish their play at the BSC McAttack Bash on Saturday, when they play Covenant at 2:00 pm.
