Generals edged by George Mason, 4-3, to open spring play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 18 Washington and Lee women's tennis team fell in its first match of the spring, 4-3, to Division I George Mason at Christopher Newport on Friday evening.

The Patriots (6-1) took two out of three doubles matches to claim the first point. The Generals (0-1) battled back with wins from junior Lily Horsley (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's School) in No. 4 singles and first-year Georgia Wright (Austin, Texas / Regents School of Austin) in No. 3 singles to gain a 2-1 advantage.

First-year Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La./Mount Carmel Academy) claimed a victory over Sydney Green at No. 1 singles after taking a third-set tiebreak, 10-7, but George Mason's Brianna Gibbs was victorious at No. 2 singles to keep the Generals lead at a point.

The Patriots closed the match with wins in No. 5 and No. 6 singles to down the Generals, with senior Mary Hampton McNeal (Beaufort, S.C./South Carolina Connections Academy) taking GMU's Christine McCarthy to a match-deciding third-set tiebreak in the No. 5 slot.

The Generals have a quick turnaround, as they'll face-off against No. 24 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
