Six Generals Selected to NCAA Individual Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced on Wednesday the individuals who will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Championships.

The Washington and Lee men's team received one qualifier for singles and one team for doubles. The W&L women's squad garnered two competitors in the singles competition and one duo in doubles.

For the men, senior Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) will compete in singles. He is the top-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, notching a 22-6 singles record. In doubles, the Generals' No. 1 duo, sophomore Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) and first-year Michael Holt (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin), made the 16-team field. The combo are the region's third-ranked tandem, and have compiled a 23-4 record.

On the women's side, sophomores Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) were selected for the Generals. Meighan is 14-5 in singles this year and is the fourth-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. Buell is 17-6 overall and is ranked seventh in the region. The tandem of Meighan and sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) made the doubles' field. The twosome is the top-ranked team in the region and is 15-4 this season.

Both the men's and women's individual championships will each consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships are based on win-loss record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of the student-athletes.

The team championship will take place May 20-22 and the individual championships, May 23-25. Both will be at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich., and will be hosted by Kalamazoo College.

The W&L men's squad begins the team championship on Thursday when it takes on North Carolina Wesleyan in Atlanta at 2 pm. The women play Methodist on Friday at 10 am, also in Atlanta.
