Generals earn first ODAC win on Miller's late goal

Allie Smith Miller

LEXINGTON, Va. – A goal in the 77th minute from sophomore midfielder Allie Smith Miller (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster School) was all the Washington and Lee women's soccer team needed in its 1-0 triumph over Roanoke in Wednesday night's ODAC contest.

Miller's goal came off a free kick awarded to the Generals (4-1-2, 1-0-1 ODAC) in the 77th minute. Senior midfielder Danielle Spickard (Valencia, Calif./William S. Hart) sent her cross into the middle of the box, which landed at the feet of junior defender Emily Roche' (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run). Roche' lobbed softly towards the left post where Miller headed the ball past the keeper for the score.

The Generals controlled the pace of play for a majority of the game, shooting 21 times and surrendering just two shots to the Maroons (1-3-4, 0-1-1 ODAC).

Sophomore forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) and senior midfielder Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the Generals' offense with four shots apiece. For Engeland, it was just her first game of the season where she didn't record a point as the senior saw her streak of six games come to an end.

Spickard got off three shots in the contest and sophomore forward Megan Duncanson (Hillsborough, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands), junior forward Kelsey Anderson (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and Miller all shot twice. In addition to her two shots, Anderson had numerous runs down the left sideline, past Roanoke defenders and got crosses into the middle of the box for solid scoring chances throughout the game.

First-year goalkeeper Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) (2-0) was not required to make a save in earning her second straight win as the W&L defense did not allow any shots on goal. Maroons' junior keeper Chris Martin (1-3-3) suffered the loss but stopped eight out of nine shots in 90 minutes of action.

The Generals' 21-2 shot margin in the game was aided by a 13-2 edge in the first half. W&L also won the corner kick battle, taking 14 and conceding two.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday for a 12:00 pm contest against Bridgewater in the team's annual One Love game.
