LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team has received its first-ever national ranking as a Division III squad, ranking 22nd in the latest edition of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Top 25.
The Generals currently own a 2-0 dual match record after having defeated No. 11 Ferrum, 19-15, on November 3 and knocking off Southern Virginia by a score of 36-9 on November 16. Most recently, W&L claimed its first tournament championship in six years when it won the Ohio Northern Invitational over the weekend.
Augsburg tops the rankings and is followed by Wartburg, Johnson & Wales (R.I.), Ithaca and Wabash. Fellow Centennial Conference member Stevens is ranked 19th and Ferrum checks in at No. 23. The complete rankings can be found on the Intermat Wrestling website.
Washington and Lee has a long and storied tradition in the sport of wrestling, first fielding a varsity squad in 1921. The Generals were an NCAA University Division powerhouse in the program's first 30 years, regularly defeating the likes of Duke, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech. However, since joining NCAA Division III in 1973, this is the program's first national ranking.
Washington and Lee returns to action on December 17 when it hosts a number of schools for the W&L Duals. Action begins at 9:00 am.
