ROANOKE, Va. – Washington and Lee junior Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) competed in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship held at the Berglund Center on Friday afternoon.
Hallyburton fell by decision in both of his matches on Friday and was knocked out of the event.
The 184-pounder opened the tournament by taking on fourth-seeded Dan Boyle of Western New England. A second period takedown gave Boyle the advantage and he held on for a 3-1 victory.
In the back draw, Hallyburton matched up with Cody Baldridge of North Central (Ill.), falling by a score of 11-5. A pair of takedowns in the opening period gave Baldridge the upper hand and he sealed the match with two more takedowns in a decisive fourth period.
Hallyburton finishes his junior campaign with an 18-8 overall record. He finished third at the Centennial Conference Championship and won the NCAA Southeast Regional.
As a team, Washington and Lee completed the 2018-19 season with a 12-4 overall record, just one win shy of the program record and the most wins since 1985. The Generals appeared in the NWCA Division III rankings for the first time in program history, and set records for the best finish at both the Centennial Conference Championship (2nd) and the NCAA Southeast Regional (6th).
