BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team defeated Johns Hopkins for just the second time in the last 18 meetings, posting a 29-12 victory on Friday evening at Goldfarb Gymnasium to improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.

The Generals grabbed the advantage for good (8-4) when senior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) recorded a 12-1 major decision over Connor Mauriello at 141 pounds.  Sophomore 149-pounder Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) followed with a pin of Joe Paul in 2:59 for a 14-4 lead.

Each team won twice across the next four matches to make the score 20-12 heading into the 197-pound match between first-year 197-pounder Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Karl Tayeb.  Basham got a late takedown to tie the score and then posted a takedown in overtime to produce a 7-5 victory that clinched the match.  First-year 285-pounder Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) then finished things off with a pin of Henri Behaeghel in 4:09 for the final margin.

Johns Hopkins slipped to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in league play with the loss.

Washington and Lee will be in action again tomorrow when it faces the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Stevens at Johns Hopkins.  Wrestling begins at 12:00 pm.
