FERRUM, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year 285-pounder Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) secured a 6-4 overtime win to give the Generals a 19-15 road victory over 11th-ranked Ferrum in wrestling on Saturday.
The Generals (1-0) built a 17-6 lead midway through the match following a 16-2 major decision by junior Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) over first-year Christian Hite at 165 pounds. Also key in building the lead were a pin of first-year Victor Allen by sophomore Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) at 149 pounds and a 12-3 major decision by first-year Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) over sophomore Austin Smith at 157 pounds.
Ferrum (0-1) sliced the W&L advantage to just 17-15 entering the heavyweight match by taking decisions at 174, 184 and 197 pounds. After sparring to a 4-4 tie after regulation, Chadwick scored a takedown in the first overtime against senior Alveno Matthews, a 2018 NCAA Qualifier, to give the Generals their first season-opening dual meet victory since the 2010-11 campaign.
Washington and Lee will next compete at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday at 9:45 am.
