ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team sits in sixth-place out of 18 teams after the first day of competition on Friday at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by Ferrum College at Franklin County High School.
Messiah leads the team portion after the first day with 73.5 points. York (Pa.) is second with 73.0 points and is followed by Ferrum (60.5), Lycoming (59.5), Delaware Valley (52.0) and W&L (46.5).
The Generals advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals of their weight classes, while five others are still alive in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes.
Junior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) recorded a pair of major decisions to advance to the semifinals of the 141-pound weight class. He opened with a 10-1 victory over Ethan Landis of Lycoming and then posted a 12-3 win over Sean Thompson of Gettysburg. He will square off against Matthew Grossman of Wilkes in the semis on Saturday.
Sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) is also in the semifinals of the 157-pound bracket after a pair of wins. He downed David White of King's by a score of 8-6 and then recorded a 3-1 overtime win over Dominick Reyes of Johns Hopkins. He will face Kevin Edwards of Messiah in Saturday's semifinals.
Junior Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) went 2-1 and is alive in the consolation rounds at 125 pounds, while first-year Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) has also logged a 2-1 mark and is alive in the 149-pound weight class. Crew posted both of his wins by fall and has set a new W&L record for season wins by fall (12), surpassing the record of 11 pins set by Win Phillips in 1986 and equaled by David Dennis in 2012.
Senior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) went 2-1 and is still competing in the consolation bracket at 174 pounds, while sophomore Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) is 2-1 and alive at 184 pounds. Senior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) went 4-1 on Friday and is still competing in the consolation bracket at 285 pounds.
Action continues on Saturday morning at 9:00 am from Franklin County High School. The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship held in Cleveland, Ohio on March 9-10.
