DANVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team took a small squad of reserves to Averett University on Thursday evening, falling by a score of 27-19.
The Generals (9-6) did not risk injury to the starters with the NCAA Regionals occurring next weekend. W&L forfeited in four weight classes, resulting in 24 of Averett's 27 points on the evening.
The Blue & White emerged victorious in five of the six contested matches. Leading the way was sophomore Colby Boudreau (Epsom, N.H. / Northfield Mount Hermon), who notched a pin over Triston Kechter at 184 pounds in 6:42.
Sophomore Andrew Taylor (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) posted a 9-0 major decision over Jake Phelps at 165 pounds, while junior Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) and first-years Patrick Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park) and Will Kuenne (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) all recorded wins by decision. Dik downed William Merritt, 6-4, at 157 pounds, while Hofstedt registered a 5-4 win over Corbin Ryder at 174 pounds. Kuenne downed Seth Wilson by a score of 10-3 at 197 pounds.
Washington and Lee will return to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes in the NCAA Southeast Regional held at Franklin County High School. Action begins at 9:00 am each day.
