LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team recorded three individual champions and finished second out of nine teams as it hosted the annual Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational on Saturday at the Warner Center.
The University of Scranton took home team champion honors after notching 130.5 total points. W&L was second with 112.0 points and was followed by John Carroll (103.5), West Virginia Tech (74.5), Southern Virginia (61.5), Averett (56.5), Kent State-Tuscararawas (56.0), St. Andrew's (49.5) and Gettysburg (19.0).
W&L claimed eight total place-winners led by seniors Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) and Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett), along with first-year Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County), who all claimed the title in their respective weight classes.
Lefore won the title at 174 pounds by posting a 3-0 record on the day. He opened with a 17-0 technical fall over Kiel Pechko of Scranton and then notched an 11-2 major decision over Jared Torch of Kent State-Tuscararawas in the semifinals. In the title bout, he produced a 6-5 decision over Blake Dixon of John Carroll.
Kaminer won the 285-pound weight class with a 3-0 record as well. He registered a pin over Southern Virginia's Alex Brunner in 2:24 and then notched a 16-5 major decision over Averett's Thaddeus Wilkerson in the semis. He ended the tournament with a 3-1 overtime victory over Aaron Vaughan of St. Andrew's.
Crew went 4-0 in claiming the 149-pound title. He began with a pin of Gettysburg's Patrick Briody in just 0:59 and then had a 15-0 technical fall win over Noah Walker of St. Andrew's. In the semis he logged a 1-0 decision over Robert Garnett of Gettysburg and then he pinned Lane Householder of Kent State-Tuscararawas (1:34) in the championship match.
Junior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) finished 2-1 overall to place second in the 141-pound weight class, while sophomore Andrew Taylor (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) also went 2-1 in placing second at 165 pounds. Junior Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) logged a 3-1 record for a third-place finish at 125 pounds, while sophomore Alec Horne (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) and first-year Will Kuenne (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) both placed fifth in their brackets. Horne went 4-2 at 165 pounds and Kuenne was 1-3 at 184 pounds.
Washington and Lee will return to action on next Sunday, January 14 when it travels to Johns Hopkins for matches with the home-standing Blue Jays and Penn Tech starting at 11:00 am.
