WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed six place-winners en route to posting a fourth-place finish out of 13 teams at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the way for the Generals were first-year 133-pounder Matt Muller (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) and senior 184-pounder Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato), who both finished in second-place in their respective weight classes. Junior Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) finished third in the 141-pound weight class, while senior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett), junior Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) and sophomore Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) all finished fourth in their weight brackets.
Muller posted a 3-1 overall record on the day, notching a pair of wins by major decision. He advanced to the championship match with a 15-4 win over Kenny Byers of Thomas More and then fell to Alex Baider of Millersville in the title match by a score of 6-1.
Lefore went 2-1 overall, recording decisions over Jake Paulson of PSU-Behrend (5-4) and Mike Mahon of Waynesburg (4-1). He then dropped a 4-1 decision to Aidan Pasiuk of Wheeling Jesuit in the final match.
Bylykbashi opened with a pair of wins, before succumbing to Daniel Romero of Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 5-3. He then notched a 7-4 victory over Jared Donahue of Wheeling Jesuit in the third-place match to finish the day 3-1 overall.
Kaminer went 3-2 overall at 285 pounds, opening with three wins, including pins in each of his first two matches. He dropped an 8-3 decision to Garrett Wesneski of Lycoming in the third-place match.
Dik went 2-2 overall on the day at 149 pounds. He opened with two wins by fall, before dropping each of his next two, including a 15-2 loss to D.J. Mele of Millersville in the third-place match.
Conners also went 2-2 overall at 157 pounds. He posted wins by major decision and technical fall to open his tournament, before suffering a pair of one-point defeats. He was felled by Connor Craig of Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 2-1 in the third-place match.
Waynesburg took the team title with 153.5 points and was followed by Wheeling Jesuit in second-place with 145.0 points. Lycoming (102.5) was third and W&L was fourth with 94.5 points. Millersville rounded out the Top 5 with 88.5 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Sunday when it competes in the Star City Open held at the Salem Civic Center.
