Tassoni Wins Centennial 174-Pound Title

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore 174-pounder Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) claimed W&L's first conference championship wrestling title in 13 years on Saturday at the Centennial Conference Championships held at Ursinus College.

As a team, the Generals finished sixth out of nine teams with 25.5 total points.  Ursinus claimed the team title with 102.5 points, followed by Stevens Institute (65.0) in second and Johns Hopkins (52.0) in third.  The Merchant Marine Academy was fourth (52.0) and McDaniel (48.0) was sixth.  Gettysburg (19.0), NYU (8.5) and Muhlenberg (4.5) rounded out the field.

Tassoni posted a thrilling 6-5 win over Gettysburg's Jared Leon in the finals, scoring a takedown with 15 seconds left in the match to post the come-from-behind victory.  It was just the second Centennial Conference title for the Generals and the first since Joseph Mueller won the 184-pound bracket in 2001.

Tassoni advanced to the finals by notching a win by fall (5:57) over McDaniel's Ricky Tisinger in the opening round.  He then posted a 9-2 decision over Johns Hopkins' Jared Forman in the semifinals to set up the exciting finale.

First-year Bennett Lewis (St. Louis, Mo. / Westminster Christian) also advanced to the championship match of the 197-pound bracket before finishing as the conference runner-up.  Lewis opened with a 4-3 win over Evan Johnson of Johns Hopkins and then recorded a pin (4:56) of Tyler Russell from the Merchant Marine Academy in the semifinals.  He met Ursinus' Christian Psomas in the finals, with Psomas notching a win by fall (4:56).

Sophomore Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) was the only other General to post a victory on the day, going 1-2 overall.  He was pinned (2:29) by McDaniel's Taylor Avino in his opening match, before recovering to post a 4-2 decision over Camden Stoops of Gettysburg.  His day ended, however, with a 3-0 loss to Brian Walker of the Merchant Marine Academy in the consolation rounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday, as it participates in the NCAA East Regional hosted by King's (Pa.).  Action begins at 9:00 am.
