LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team suffered a 30-15 loss to Manchester University on Saturday evening at Doremus Gymnasium.
The Generals (0-2) won five of the six contested matches, but could simply not overcome forfeit losses at 125 pounds, 133 pounds, 149 pounds and 197 pounds.
Manchester (1-0) built a 24-0 lead following the forfeit win at 149 pounds, but W&L won each of the next four matches by decision to cut it to a 24-12 contest heading into the final two weight classes.
First-year Alex Niemann (Frenchtown, N.J. / Delaware Valley Regional) got things started for W&L with a 5-0 victory over first-year Rob Lane (Maroa, Ill. / Maroa-Forsythe) at 157 pounds. First-year Mac Evarts (Millersville, Pa. / Penn Manor) then posted a 13-9 decision over first-year Collin Wise (Cairo, Ohio / Bath) at 165 pounds, before sophomore Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) notched a 6-3 win over first-year Dylan Lauffer (Fairfield, Ohio / Fairfield) at 174 pounds. Sophomore Zac Richey (Swoope, Va. / Buffalo Gap) then registered a thrilling 7-6 win over first-year Logan Floor (Sheridan, Ind. / Westfield) with a takedown in the final seconds of his match at 184 pounds.
Manchester picked up its final forfeit win at 197 pounds and sophomore Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) capped the scoring for the Generals with a 5-2 decision over senior Jason Pedigo (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) at 285 pounds.
Washington and Lee will return to the mat on Saturday when it hosts Division I George Mason for a 2:00 pm contest.
