W&L Wrestling Finishes Eighth at Centennial Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Johns Hopkins. 

Washington and Lee finished eighth out of the nine teams in the event with 14 points.  Ursinus won the league title with 113 points and was followed by Johns Hopkins in second with 98 points.  McDaniel finished third with 48 points, NYU was fifth with 44 points and was followed by the Merchant Marine Academy (37), Stevens Institute (33), Gettysburg (17), W&L (14) and Muhlenberg (13.5).

The Generals had two placewinners on the day as first-year Tyler Kaelin (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) finished fourth in the 141-pound weight class and first-year Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) placed fourth in the 285 pound weight class.

Kaelin fell to Ursinus' Elisha Gaylor in the opening round by a score of 13-3, then knocked off Steven's Robert Ranalli in the consolations, 9-1.  He also defeated Benjamin Mitchell of McDaniel by fall (6:17), before dropping a 7-5 decision to Corbin Lee of NYU in the third-place match.

Cokeley's day began with a loss to McDaniel's Chris Galletta (Fall 5:32), before he posted two straight wins in the consolation bracket.  He defeated Jared Schlett of Gettysburg by fall (4:58) and then posted a 2-1 win over Anthony Chu of NYU.  His day ended when he lost in a rematch with Galletta in the third-place match.  Galletta won on riding time in overtime.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it competes in the NCAA East Regional hosted by Gettysburg College.  Action begins at 9:00 am.
