LYNCHBURG, Va. – The top-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team claimed its eighth straight victory with a 20-9 win over Lynchburg College at Shellenberger Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) also tied a program single-game record with six assists.
The Generals (11-2, 5-0) opened an 11-1 advantage in the first 19:59 of the game and never looked back in defeating the Hornets (5-7, 2-3) by the 11-goal final margin.
First-year attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) gave the Blue & White a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the contest when she scored unassisted in front of the goal. Four different Generals also scored over the next 6:31 to make it a 5-0 game at the 22:56 mark.
Lynchburg got on the board at the 21:30 mark, but W&L tacked on six more goals in a span of 8:46 to push out to an 11-1 lead. Faria and senior attacker Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) scored two goals each during the run, while Shelley added one goal and two assists.
The two teams each traded goals back-and-forth over the next 12:58, before the Generals used a 6-2 run to lengthen the lead to 13 goals (20-7) with 8:34 remaining in the game. Senior midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) notched two goals during the spurt, while Peters had one goal and one assist. Shelley chipped in a pair of assists as well.
W&L held a 30-17 advantage in shots, while LC posted a 13-11 advantage in ground balls. The Generals also took 17 of the 29 draws.
Faria tallied a season-high tying five goals, while Peters posted a season-high six points on four goals and two assists. Shelley registered a career-high tying seven points on one goal and her six assists. She is the seventh General to post six assists in a game and it marked the eighth time it has occurred. Senior attacker Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) recorded three goals and Hayes finished with two goals and one assist.
Junior Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) spearheaded the defense with seven draw controls, four ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the first 44:00 in goal, logging three saves with seven goals allowed to earn the win. She was spelled by senior Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Prep), who had two saves and two goals allowed in 16:00.
Junior midfielder Danielle Hook and senior midfielder Kaleigh Ridgely paced the Hornets with two goals each. Junior goalie Emmy Yarmy and senior goalie Lauren Bodamer both played in goal for LC, combining for four saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
