NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — An 8-0 run early in the first half, sparked by four goals from first-year attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), led the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 19-6 victory at Christopher Newport on Tuesday at Captains Turf Field.

The Captains (0-2) notched the first tally of the contest, but from the 28:10 mark until there was 18:35 left in the half, the Generals registered eight straight goals to take control of the game. Faria initiated the spurt, scoring the Blue and White's first three goals.

Senior attacker Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got on the board off an assist from senior attacker Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's), to give W&L a 4-1 edge at the 24:07 mark. Junior attacker Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) then netted her first goal of the season with 23:15 remaining in the half.

Tucker scored (6-1) just 24 seconds later off an assist from sophomore attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), and Faria registered her fourth goal of the game 35 seconds after Tucker scored. Tucker capped the run with a free-position goal at the 18:35 mark, and then the Generals outscored CNU, 10-2, over the final 18 minutes of the stanza to take an 18-3 lead at intermission. The Captains scored three goals to W&L's one over the final 30 minutes, as the Blue and White held on for the 13-goal win.

The Generals had eight players record a goal and five players had multiple tallies. Faria led the team with five, while Tucker added three goals, two assists and seven draw controls. Murray totaled three goals and one assist, and Hayes notched three goals on four shots.

Shelley had two goals and a career-best five assists. The five helpers are tied for the eighth-most in a single game in program history. Senior attacker Rebecca Wellford (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), sophomore midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and first-year attacker Liv Truesdell (New York, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart) each had one goal.

Junior defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) contributed a team-best two caused turnovers, three draw controls and two ground balls. The Generals were a perfect 11-for-11 on clear opportunities and held an 18-10 advantage in draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) played 30 minutes in goal to earn the victory. She stopped two shots, while allowing three goals. Senior Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) saw the final 30 minutes of action and made three saves.

Junior midfielder Sam Wettengel led CNU with three goals, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Kaitlyn Ready suffered the loss in goal for the Captains, surrendering 15 goals in 53:49 of action. She also had six saves.
