FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Eighth-ranked Mary Washington outscored the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team, 6-3, in the second half en route to a 10-8 victory for the Eagles on Saturday. Senior attacker Julia Albert of UMW led the way with a game-high five goals.

The Generals (0-1) held a 5-4 advantage at intermission, but Mary Washington (1-0) knotted the contest off a goal by Albert just 1:36 into the second half. Senior midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif./Hotchkiss) quickly gave the Blue and White a 6-5 edge on an unassisted tally with 26:11 left in the game.

The margin remained at one for the next 13 minutes of action, but then UMW registered four straight goals in a span of 4:22 to assume a 9-6 advantage with 9:08 left on the clock. The Generals made one final push over the final eight minutes, with senior midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) recording her second goal of the contest off a free-position shot to pull W&L to within two (9-7) at the 7:58 mark.

Just two minutes later, first-year attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored off a feed from Peters to trim the deficit to one, 9-8, with 6:01 to go in the game. The Blue and White then had a chance to tie the contest on a free-position shot with 3:17 remaining.

Senior attacker Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took the attempt, sending a low shot toward the cage, but senior goalkeeper Hanna Ashby stopped the shot, her 10th of the contest, to keep UMW in front. Mary Washington cleared the ball, and following a timeout, Albert scored the final goal with 1:50 left to seal the victory for the Eagles.

Carden, Faria and senior attacker Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's) each had two goals to lead the Generals. Tucker also totaled seven draw controls. Peters contributed one goal and two assists.

Junior defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) led the team with two ground balls, and junior attacker Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) and Carden each caused two turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) played all 60 minutes, making 11 saves.

Albert took nine shots to register her game-high five goals. She also had five draw controls. Senior attacker Mackenzie Maguire totaled two goals and one assist. Ashby played all 60 minutes of action to total her 10 saves.
