W&L Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 10-9 win at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team opened the 2012 season with a narrow 10-9 win over Christopher Newport on Monday afternoon at Captains Field.

In a rematch of last season's NCAA First Round contest won 15-6 by W&L, CNU struck first, netting three goals in the opening 4:45, prompting W&L (1-0) to call timeout at the 25:45 mark.

Sophomore attacker Jessica Singer started the early onslaught with an unassisted tally just 1:07 into the contest. Junior attacker Lauren King added an unassisted tally at the 26:15 mark and after the Captains won the ensuing draw control, sophomore midfielder Ashton Marshall took a feed from junior defender Kelly Lane and found the back of the net for the early 3-0 lead.

Sophomore attacker Katie Hagen (West Chester, Pa/Notre Dame) put W&L on the board at the 22:42 mark with a free position goal and sophomore midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) pulled the Generals to within a goal (3-2) on another free position shot with 21:05 on the clock.

First-year midfielder Julia Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./Taft School) tied the contest at 3-3 with a man-up free position shot at the 14:35 mark and senior attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) gave the Generals their first lead (4-3) when she scored off a feed from sophomore attacker Gretta Witter (Douglasville, Pa./The Hill School).

CNU answered with another goal at the 7:45 mark to knot the score at 4-4 before two goals by Shearin and a tally by sophomore attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) gave W&L a 7-4 lead heading into the break.

In the second period, CNU scored three unanswered tallies to tie the contest at 7-7 by the 16:04 mark. Following another W&L timeout, the Generals responded in kind with three unanswered goals of their own, including Shearins' fourth tally of the game, to take a 10-7 lead with 6:42 to play.

Singer and King then tallied goals just over a minute apart to make it a one-goal game at 4:16, but the Captains failed to put a shot on goal down the stretch and W&L held on for the win.

Shearin finished with a game-high four goals and Van Sant added a pair of tallies. Witter finished with two assists. Sophomore defender Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) picked up four groundballs for the Generals and sophomore defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) grabbed three.

Senior Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and first-year Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) split time in goal. Linder started and played the first 30:00, allowing four goals and making one save. Mulligan played the final 30:00, coming up with three saves while allowing five goals.

Singer led the Captains with three goals, while Marshall and King each netted a pair. Sophomore attacker Emily Johnson led CNU with four groundballs and junior midfielder Monica Evans added three. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson played all 60:00 in net, allowing 10 goals and making eight saves.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Stevenson at 1:00 pm.
