W&L Women's Golf Sits in a Tie for Seventh After Day 1 of NCAA's

HOUSTON, Texas – The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team shot an opening round score of 311 (+23) and sits in a tie for seventh out of 25 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas on Tuesday.

The Generals are just five strokes off the lead, which is held by 11th-ranked Redlands, who posted a +18 score of 306.  Fifth-ranked DePauw and 10th-ranked Methodist are tied for second, one shot back with a 307 (+19).

Centre's Bailey Plourde is the individual leader, posting the only red number on day one with a 71 (-1).  She holds a two-stroke lead over Taylor Beckwith of Whittier, who carded a 73 (+1).

W&L sophomore Laurie Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) is just four strokes off the lead, tied with nine others for sixth-place with a 75 (+3).

Junior Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) is just one shot behind Jones, sitting in a tie for 16th-place with a 76 (+4). 

Sophomore Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) carded a 78 (+6) and is tied for 29th, while first-year Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) posted an 82 and is tied for 64th out of the 131 golfers in the field with an 82 (+10).

Sophomore Hannah Wright (Thompsons Station, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) rounds out the Generals in the field with a 103 (+31) that is tied for 123rd overall.

Action continues on Wednesday with the second round from Bay Oaks.
