PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Washington and Lee sophomore Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) carded a +2 score of 75 to tie for the individual championship at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate hosted by Berry College at the Mountain View Course on Saturday.
Townsend and Centre's Bailey Plourde finished one stroke ahead of the field, while 20th-ranked Methodist took the team title with a +16 score of 308. The Generals carded a 327 (+35) to place in a tie for fifth out of 14 teams. Eighth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer was second (315) and was followed by Christopher Newport (323), 14th-ranked Berry (325), Huntingdon (327) and W&L. The field featured 12 of the Top 40 teams in Division III.
Townsend birdied the 18th hole to claim a share of the individual title. Junior Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) finished in a tie for 20th with an 80 (+7), while sophomore Laurie Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) tied for 26th out of the 88 golfers in the event with an 81 (+8).
First-year Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) carded a 91 (+18) to tie for 63rd and sophomore Hannah Wright (Thompsons Station, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) posted a 100 (+27) to finish 82nd overall.
Washington and Lee will hit the links again on March 15-17 at the Jekyll Island Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe College.
