SANDESTIN, Fla. – Washington and Lee senior Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C. / Elkin) tied for the lowest round of the day (73) on Tuesday and finished in a tie for first-place at the Golfweek Women's Division III Fall Invitational held at the Baytowne Golf Club.
Hall shot an opening round score of 78 (+6) on Sunday, but followed with successive rounds of 73 (+1) on both Monday and Tuesday to tie Samantha Haubenstock of Washington (Mo.) for the individual title at 224 (+8). Haubenstock shot 74 in the opening round and carded a 75 on each of the final two days for her score of 224 (+8).
For Hall, the win was the fourth of her career and the first since she claimed the 2016 ODAC Championship title.
As a team, the Generals placed fifth overall out of the 16 teams in the event, carding a three-day score of 321-318-315—954 (+90). W&L lowered its team total by three strokes each day to finish in the top third of an event that featured many of the top Division III programs in the country, including two-time defending National Champions Rhodes, which placed 10th overall.
Wash U won the team title with a +48 score of 304-307-301—912. Huntingdon was second with a 311-314-320—945 (+32), while Mary Hardin-Baylor was third with a +86 score of 323-315-312—950. Berry was fourth, just two strokes ahead of the Generals with a +88 score of 331-307-314—952.
First-year Hannah Jones (Atlanta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) carded a +23 score of 79-80-80—239 for the Generals, finishing in a tie for 23rd out of the 78 golfers in the tournament. Senior Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) tied for 32nd with a 79-84-84—247 (+31) and sophomore Griffin Foultz (San Antonio, Texas / St. Mary's Hall) tied for 43rd with an 85-87-78—250 (+34). Senior Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy) carded a score of 80-81-87—258 (+42) to tie for 62nd overall.
Washington and Lee has now finished the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule and will return to action this spring.
