Perszyk Leads W&L Women's Basketball to a 75-44 Victory over Hollins

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) scored a game-high 25 points to lead the fifth-seeded Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 75-44 win over 12th-seeded Hollins in the first round of the ODAC Tournament on Monday at the Warner Center.

W&L (16-9) took control of the contest midway through the first period on a 17-6 run that gave the Generals an 11-point lead (21-10) heading into the second quarter. Perszyk scored 10 points during the surge.

Holding a 25-12 advantage with 8:46 left in the second period, the Generals scored eight straight points to extend the lead to 21 (33-12).  First-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) and sophomore guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) hit back-to-back three-pointers during the spurt and sophomore forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) capped the run with a layup with 5:32 left in the second.

W&L maintained a healthy advantage for the remainder of the period and took a 38-21 lead into the halftime break. Perszyk scored 15 of her 25 points in the opening 20 minutes of action.

The Blue and White held a 42-21 edge with 8:31 remaining in the third, following a pair of free throws by Perszyk, but Hollins (4-22) used an 8-0 surge to pull within 13 (42-29) by the 5:26 mark. Junior forward Deana Campbell scored the first six points of the spurt.

The Generals ended Hollins' run with seven straight points to push the lead back to 20 (49-29) with 4:44 to go in the period. Smithey scored the first four points and then a three by Perszyk capped off the run. Hollins would get no closer for the remainder of the game, as the Generals pulled away for the 31-point win.

For the game, W&L shot 39.4 percent (26-66) from the floor, 37.0 percent (10-27) from three and hit 13-of-14 (.929) from the foul line. The Generals committed just eight turnovers and dished out 17 assists.

Perszyk went 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) finished with 15 points, while Smithey totaled 10 points and five rebounds. First-year guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School) added nine points and eight boards.

Hollins shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field, but hit just 2-of-10 (.200) from the beyond the arc.  Senior forward LaChrisha Hill finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while first-year guard Keyazia Taylor totaled 10 points and nine boards.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday at 3:00 pm when it takes on fourth-seeded Guilford in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.
