LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg College used a 14-0 run in the second period to pull away for a 66-47 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Turner Gym.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for W&L (14-8, 8-6), while the Hornets (20-3, 12-2) extended their winning streak to six in a row.

W&L played even with the Hornets for the opening 13 minutes of the contest, trailing just 21-20 with 6:43 left in the second period following a jumper by first-year guard Katie Popp (Rye, N.Y. / Rye).  Senior guard Olivia DeFrancesco then ignited a run for LC, scoring five straight points and 11 total points during a 14-0 run that gave the Hornets a 35-20 lead with 1:50 left in the half.  All told, Lynchburg outscored W&L 21-9 in the period, with Popp scoring all nine points for the Generals, who trailed 36-23 at the break.

The Blue & White attempted a comeback midway through the third period, slicing it to an eight-point game (40-32) following a three-pointer by first-year guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School) at the 7:04 mark, but the Hornets scored six straight shortly thereafter and carried a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Popp led all scorers with 24 points and she grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.  She was 11-of-22 from the field, but the eight other Generals who saw action shot a combined 5-for-29 (.172) in the contest.  Overall, W&L shot 31.4 percent (16-51) and 5-of-20 (.250) from beyond the arc.  Hughes added eight points as well.

Lynchburg shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor and held a 40-28 edge in rebounding.  DeFrancesco paced five players in double figures with 20 points.  Senior forward Caroline Naumann produced 14 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forwards Molly Shephard and Alex Allen had 11 points and eight boards apiece.  Senior guard Brittany Afolabi-Brown added 10 points and six rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
