W&L Women's Basketball Picked Fifth in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2017-18 women's basketball preseason coaches' poll on Thursday and Washington and Lee and Guilford both totaled 79 points to tie for the fifth spot in the poll.

Eastern Mennonite took the top spot with seven of the 12 first-place votes and 112 points. Lynchburg was second with 110 points and the remaining five first-place nods. Emory & Henry took the third spot with 91 points and Randolph-Macon earned 89 points for the fourth spot.

Virginia Wesleyan was picked seventh (74), Roanoke was selected eighth (46) and Randolph was tabbed ninth (39). Bridgewater (35), Shenandoah (27) and Hollins (11) completed the poll.

The Generals return four starters and 11 letterwinners from the team that advanced to the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals last season before falling to eventual champion Guilford, 72-55. Overall, the team finished the 2016-17 campaign 12-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference.

Senior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) returns as the team's top player. She earned First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-State honors last year. Perszyk led the Generals with 19.4 points per game, which ranks third on W&L's single-season points per game list. She also shot 38.0 percent (41-108) from behind the arc and 90.4 (110-122) percent from the free throw line. She enters the season with 955 points and ranks third on the W&L career three-pointers made list with 149.

Senior forwards Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) and Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville), senior guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) and sophomore guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) also all return as key contributors for W&L. Redding recorded a team-best 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, while also tallying 7.1 points per contest. Kelly averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while Ferrero recorded 6.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Casey totaled 13.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while also shooting 37.3 percent (72-193) from three-point range.

W&L kicks off its season on November 15, when it travels to 25th-ranked Mary Washington. Action is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
