W&L Women's Basketball Upended by Marymount, 60-54

ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount out-scored the Washington and Lee women's basketball team 11-3 over the final 5:58 of the game to come away with a 60-54 win over the Generals in the championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at the Verizon Sports Arena.

The Generals (1-2) grabbed the lead on their opening offensive possession of the contest and did not trail until late in the third period.  A three-pointer by first-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) at the 3:23 mark of the first quarter gave the Blue & White a seven-point lead at 17-10.

The W&L lead swelled to nine points (25-16) just 1:19 into the second period following a layup by senior guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly), but the Generals simply could not pull away and they carried a 35-31 lead into the halftime break.  Casey was hot in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 13 first-half points.

The Saints (3-0) chipped away at the W&L advantage, eventually taking their first lead (43-41) at the 2:41 mark of the third period on a layup by Lauryn Stouffer.  W&L wrestled it right back with a triple by junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) the next time down the floor and the lead changed hands five more times before Marymount grabbed the lead for good at 53-51 on a layup by junior guard Leah Hurst with 4:05 left in the game.  The Saints would hold W&L to just one field goal the rest of the way, a three-pointer by Clifford with one second remaining that provided final margin.

W&L shot just 7-23 (.304) from the field over the final two periods and Marymount forced seven W&L turnovers in the decisive fourth period.  Casey paced three players in double figures for W&L with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-6 from distance.  Perszyk notched 11 points on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Clifford totaled 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and three blocks.  For her efforts, she was named to the all-tournament team.

Marymount hit 6-of-11 (.545) shots in the fourth quarter and finished 25-of-57 (.439) for the game.  Hurst led the way with 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals, while junior center Nicole Viscuso tallied 12 points.  First-year guard Regan Lohr added 10 points and eight boards.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Bridgewater for its ODAC-opener at 5:00 pm.
