LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to a 34-6 first-half lead and cruised to a 76-29 victory over Mary Baldwin in the opening game of the W&L Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (1-0) limited the Fighting Squirrels (0-1) to just 19.4 percent (12-62) shooting from the field and forced 24 turnovers in the contest.
W&L shot 44.4 percent (16-36) from the floor and hit 15-of-17 (.882) free throws in the first half en route to posting a 47-14 lead at the break. Sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) scored 10 of her team-leading 12 points in the opening 20 minutes, finishing 4-5 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line.
For the game, the Generals were 21-69 (.391) from the field and 21-26 (.808) from the free throw line. They also held a 52-41 rebounding edge and committed just 12 turnovers.
Junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) and sophomore guard Rachel Stone (Ambler, Pa. / Wissahickon) each posted nine points, while junior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and first-year forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) added seven points each.
Mary Baldwin was led by junior guard Kaybria Johnson's (Washington, D.C. / Oakton) game-high 14 points. First-year guard Von Redmond (Newport News, Va. / Denbigh) chipped in eight points and seven boards.
Washington and Lee continues play in the W&L Classic on Sunday when it hosts Methodist at 2:00 pm.
