Strong Defense Leads W&L to a 68-56 Victory over Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team held Averett to just 6-of-25 shooting in the final 14:30 as the Generals defeated the Cougars, 68-56, in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the Warner Center. 

Averett took a 38-37 lead with 16:01 on the clock, but the Generals used a 21-7 run over the next 9:22 to take a 13 point lead (58-45). Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) began the run with a three-pointer at the 15:00 minute mark and first-year forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) scored the next eight points to extend the W&L lead to 48-40 with 12:05 on the clock. Sophomore forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) added six points herself as the Blue and White pulled away for the win.

W&L led by as many as nine points (19-10) in the first half, but the Cougars used a 15-5 run over the next 6:54 to a take a 25-24 lead with 3:27 left to play. The Generals answered with a quick 8-4 run to take a three-point lead (32-29) going into the intermission.

Averett used a quick 9-0 burst to take the one-point lead (38-37) before the Generals went on their decisive run to secure the victory.

For the game, the Blue and White limited AU to 34.3 percent shooting (23-67) from the floor and 27.3 (3-11) percent from behind the arc, while holding an impressive 48-27 edge on the glass. The Generals also outscored the Cougars, 36-22, in the paint and scored 20 points off of 13 Averett turnovers.

Sharman led the Generals, notching a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Hendricks recorded 15 points on the night, while Wildes also notched a career-high 15 points. First year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) chipped in seven points, nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) had a good floor game, finishing with a game-high 10 rebounds and six assists. 

First-year forward Brianna Taylor (Rocky Mount, Va. / Franklin County) paced the Cougar offense with 13 points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Nicole Garcia (Miami, Fla. / Ronald Reagan) scored nine points off the bench, while junior guard Aundrea Burns (Virginia Beach, Va. / Tallwood) and sophomore forward Oneka Jones (Rustburg, Va. / Rustburg) posted eight points apiece. Jones also pulled in 10 rebounds.

The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday, December 31 when they travel to Sewanee for a 2:00 pm contest.
