LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee riding team competed in the Collegiate Cup at the Spring Welcome Horse show, splitting into two teams and placing fifth and seventh on Saturday.
Sweet Briar split into two teams as well and took two of the top-three spots, placing first and third. Virginia Team 1 came in second, while the Emory & Henry Blue team placed fourth. Fifth-place W&L Blue was followed by Virginia Team 2 in sixth, W&L White, Randolph Rugrats and Emory & Henry Gold to round out the field.
The W&L Blue team was made up of first-years Sam Johnson (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) (Open) and Lexie Paxton (Rockbridge Baths, Va./Rockbridge County) (Intermediate) and sophomore Mischa Biszick (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) (Novice), while the White team was comprised of senior Elise George (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) (Open), junior Charlotte Radcliffe (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) (Intermediate) and senior Sarah Walters (Glen Arm, Md./McDonogh School) (Novice).
Johnson and Biszick led the way for the Generals with top finishes. Johnson placed third in the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) National Derby on Saturday evening, while Biszick placed first and second in the 0.85m jumper division.
Three of the schools in attendance at the Collegiate Cup will represent their respective regions at the IHSA Zone Finals in April, led by Sweet Briar and Emory & Henry, with Randolph and UVA battling for the final spot.
The Generals will be back in action on March 23 at the Virginia IHSA Invitational at 10:00 am.
