W&L Equestrian Places Fourth at Randolph IHSA Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team finished in fourth-place out of eight teams on Saturday at the Randolph IHSA Invitational.

Randolph topped the field with 35 points. Bridgewater placed second with 31 points, while Hollins finished third with 29 markers. The Generals tallied 27 points and Lynchburg rounded out the Top 5 with 23 points.

The Generals placed in nine out of the 14 events and had three first-place finishes. Senior Jane Chiavelli (Ashland, Mass. / St. Mark's School) placed first in the open equitation over fences, while first-year Curry Sherard (Spartanburg, S.C. / Spartanburg Day School) took the top spot in the intermediate equitation over fences. Sophomore Dani Powers (McKenney, Va. / Dinwiddie) claimed first-place in the walk-trot.

W&L also posted three third-place finishes. Sherard had a third-place showing in the novice flat, while first-year Maggie O'Berry (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) claimed third in the walk-trot-canter 2B. In the walk-trot, senior Ben Whedon (Corning, N.Y. / Corning East) took third. 

The Blue and White currently ranks seventh in the regional team standings with 110 points. Randolph is in first-place with 171 points, while UVA has 156 points to rank second.

The equestrian team returns to the field today when it co-hosts with Hollins. Action is set to begin at 10:00 am on the campus of Hollins.
