W&L Riding Finishes Fifth at ODAC Championships

SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee riding team totaled 9 points to finish in fifth place at the ODAC Championship on Wednesday at the Kirby Riding Ring and Stables on the campus of Hollins University.

Hollins won the ODAC Championship after tallying 17 total points. Sweet Briar finished second with 16 markers and Lynchburg earned 12 points to take third. W&L and Randolph both collected nine points, however the WildCats were awarded fourth place based on a tiebreaker with the points. Bridgewater finished sixth with three points.

W&L's four person ODAC team was comprised of seniors Caleigh Wells (Calabasas, Calif. / Louisville), and Ashley Ooms (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional), junior Jane Chiavelli (Ashland, Mass. / St. Mark's School) and sophomore Elise George (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic).

The event included two over fences phases, where all four rides from each team competed and the score was taken from the average of two judges. The final round was on the flat and only two riders per school competed. Their scores also came from the average of the two judges.

The Generals sat in third place after the first equitation over fences class, but moved into fifth after the second equitation over fences and took fourth on the flat.

Ooms was selected as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Chiavelli and Wells earned All-ODAC accolades. Chiavelli posted 78.625 points, while Wells recorded 78.0625 points.

Lynchburg's Christina Antonucci was awarded the ODAC Rider of the Year honors. Kirby Tidmore from Randolph earned the conference Rookie of the Year accolades and Hollins' Claudia Roland was named Coach of the Year.

With the completion of the ODAC Championship, this concludes the 2016-17 W&L riding season.
