FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team opened its 2018-19 season on Friday in the first day of competition at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
In doubles, the Generals have advanced two teams to the Round of 16. The ninth-seeded tandem of junior Harry Shepherd (New York, N.Y. / St. George's School) and first-year Alex Fedor (Salem, Ore. / South Salem) won their opening match by a score of 8-7 (5) over Patrick Maclean and Kelson Weber from Salisbury. They will return to action on Saturday morning against a tandem from Mary Washington.
The team of junior Mitchell Thomas (Houma, La. / Vandebilt Catholic) and first-year Bobby Neuner (Darien, Conn. / Darien) also won their opener, taking an 8-7 (7) decision from Samuel Gibson and Clark Safran of Carnegie Mellon. They will play a team from Haverford in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
In singles action, the Generals had five players competing in the championship draw. Only Thomas emerged with a victory, defeating Kunal Barde of Carnegie Mellon, 6-4, 2-0 retired in the opening round. However, he then fell to Vishnu Joshi of Johns Hopkins in his second match, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Several players will continue play in consolation singles brackets on Saturday.
Champions of the championship singles and doubles brackets will advance to the ITA National Championships on November 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz.
