Three Generals Earn VaSID All-State Men's Tennis Honors

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its College Division All-State Men's Tennis Team on Friday and three Generals were named to the first or second team.

Junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) and sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) earned first team all-state honors in both singles and doubles, while junior Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) was a second team all-state honoree in singles.

Shamshiri and Holt teamed to form the Generals' No. 1 doubles team and the duo earned First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-America honors after posting a 24-5 record together and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Doubles Tournament.

Shamshiri also played No. 1 singles for W&L, notching a 10-10 record en route to earning First Team All-ODAC honors in both singles and doubles, and receiving the ODAC Player of the Year award.

Holt logged an 18-6 singles record and a 26-5 overall doubles mark en route to garnering First Team All-ODAC laurels in both.  He also received the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and was named Capital One Third Team Academic All-America.

Hu was a First Team All-ODAC honoree in singles and a Second Team All-ODAC selection in doubles during the 2014 season.  He posted a 10-5 record at No. 3 singles and a 12-6 mark at No. 2 doubles.

Mary Washington junior Tyler Carey was named the VaSID Player of the Year, while UMW's Todd Helbling was named the Coach of the Year.  Virginia Wesleyan first-year Kenney Downing garnered VaSID Rookie of the Year accolades.

Washington and Lee completed the 2014 season with an 18-5 overall record and a 10-0 league record.  The Generals won the ODAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
