W&L Swimming Takes Dual Meet Against Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swim teams took part in a dual meet with Transylvania on Saturday at Cy Twombly pool and both teams came away with victories. The men posted a 161-97 victory while the ladies notched a 150-110 triumph.

Sophomore Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) were both double-event winners for the women, as the Generals placed first in eight events. Cassada took the 100 back with a time of 1:03.54 and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad that touched in with a time of 1:55.13. She was joined on the relay by first-year Megan Bock (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), sophomore Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School). Starnes claimed two individual events, finishing first with a time of 2:02.35 in the 200 free and winning the 500 free with a time of 5:31.81.

The women also received victories from first-year Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) in the 1000 free (11:20.11), senior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) in the 100 breast with a time of 1:11.60, first-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 200 fly (2:16.32) and sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) taking the 200 back with a time of 2:16.44.

On the men’s side, the Generals were paced by 10 first-place finishers, including four event victories from senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy). Talluri touched in first in the 50 free (22.15) and 100 free (49.05) and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays. The 200 medley relay was victorious with a time of 1:40.81, where Talluri was joined by senior Josh Gonzales (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), senior Ian Childers (Ona, W.Va./Greater Latrobe) and senior Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar). Junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) and first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) joined Talluri on the winning 200 free relay that finished with a time of 1:30.08.

W&L also received multiple-event victories from senior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Childers. Stagg took both the 200 fly (2:02.31) and 200 IM (2:02.77) while Childers touched first in 200 breast with a time of 2:20.22 in addition to the 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Ben Asher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy), sophomore Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and sophomore Cam Smith (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) rounded out the top finishers for the Generals. Absher claimed the 1000 free with a time of 10:27.86, while Harder took the 100 back (56.96) and Smith touched first in the 100 fly (55.72).

The women return to action next Saturday as they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 2:00 ODAC meet. The men will take to the pool next Friday and Saturday when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a two-day meet against Wingate, Rollins and Catawba.
