ATLANTA, Ga. — Senior midfielder Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) notched a career-high five points to lead the No. 14 Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a season-opening 3-2 victory over Oglethorpe on Friday at the Sonny Carter Invitational.
The Generals got the scoring started early when, in the fifth minute, Lencioni beat the keeper and dribbled the ball into the net for the opening tally. Just seven minutes later, Lencioni scored again when senior midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C./Independence) fed Lencioni on a give-and-go off a corner kick to double the Generals' lead, giving him his second career multi-goal game.
In the 15th minute, junior forwards Gabriel Alvarez and Matt Ward teamed up to get Oglethorpe on the board when Alvarez scored on a shot from outside the 18-yard box.
The game saw no further scores until the 57th minute when Lencioni found senior midfielder Will Rowson (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary School) in the center of the goal box, who headed in Lencioni's cross to put the Generals back up by two goals.
First-year midfielder Angel Guevara scored for Oglethorpe in the 73rd minute to cut the W&L lead back to one, but the Generals held the Stormy Petrels in check the rest of the way to earn the win.
Lencioni got off three shots in the game and put two on net resulting in both of his goals to go along with his assist. Senior midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif./Buchannan) also took three shots to tie Lencioni for the team lead. Rowson's goal came on his only shot of the game and sophomore midfielder Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) fired two shots and put one on target.
Alex Harper (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) (1-0) earned the win as the Generals' goalkeeper as the sophomore saved three out of five shots in 90 minutes.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot W&L by a 15-11 margin while the Generals took five corner kicks to three for the Stormy Petrels.
Guevara and Alvarez led the attack for Oglethorpe, scoring both goals on three shots combined with an assist coming from Ward and first-year forward Abraham Lopez. Junior Scott Zoino (0-1) took the loss for the Stormy Petrels in goal, making two saves in 90 minutes of action.
