LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite a goal from junior forward Tyler Runge (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park) the third-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell to top-seeded Lynchburg, 2-1, in the ODAC Championship game on Sunday at Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets (17-1-2) tallied the first goal of the game at the 5:55 mark. Senior forward Jon Mackey sent a ball into the box and found sophomore midfielder Jack Ashby, who headed it into the net just past the hands of W&L (14-4-1) senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg). Lynchburg took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead 19 seconds into the second half. The Generals attempted to clear the ball, but senior forward Freddy Flores blocked the clearance and the ball ricocheted into the back of the net.
Runge tallied the Blue and White's lone goal at the 86:54 mark after he received the ball in the center of the box off of a cross from junior midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) and Runge fired it into the lower corner of the net.
For the game, Washington and Lee held a 17-11 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks. Beck played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Generals and made two saves. Junior keeper Dylan McLaurin also played the entire contest in goal and made seven stops for the Hornets.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, senior defender Sterling Kirk (San Francisco, Calif. / Stuart Hall/ Hotchkiss), junior midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) and sophomore defender Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchanan) earned a spot on the ODAC All-Tournament team.
Washington and Lee will now wait to see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Those selections will be announced on Monday at 1:30 pm.
