NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchannan) scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute to lead the 24th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team past 21st-ranked Christopher Newport, 2-1, on Saturday night in the second day of the CNU Soccer Classic.
With the score tied 1-1, Dolberg tallied the game-winning goal at 53:06. He received the ball on the left side of the field and dribbled past two defenders, before striking it into the lower corner past CNU junior goalkeeper Zach Pedini to give the Blue and White the victory.
The Generals (2-0) took an early 1-0 lead, when junior defender Jack Miller (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) played the ball into the box and found first-year forward Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga. / North Gwinnett), who shot it into the lower corner of the net at the 7:23 mark.
CNU (1-1) tied the game, 1-1, when junior midfielder Daniel Zeitoun sent the ball into the box and found the head of first-year defender Davis Pillow at 31:41. The game remained knotted, 1-1, going into the halftime.
Christopher Newport held a 13-7 shot advantage, while W&L led in corner kicks, 5-4. Senior Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves for the Generals. Pedini also played the full 90 minutes and made three stops.
W&L returns to action next Saturday, when it hosts Emory at 12:00 pm.
