NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior midfielder Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School) scored the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute to help lead the 24th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Greensboro on Friday night at the CNU Soccer Classic.
The Generals (1-0) scored their first goal of the game at the 22:47 mark after a counter-attack off of a Greensboro (0-1) corner kick. Junior midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchannan) dribbled up the sideline and crossed the ball into the center of the box, finding junior midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School), who made a move past a Pride defender and found the top corner of the net.
Senior midfielder Sam Knapke (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Benet Academy) took a W&L free kick in the corner right outside of the box in the 32nd minute. Molnar scored the game-winner at 32:57 after heading the ball into the back of the net off Knapke's free kick. The Blue and White took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Pride got on the board at the 23:20 mark of the second half after junior midfielder Carlos Barragan received the ball from first-year midfielder Samuel Linker and chipped the ball over senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck's (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) head to make it, 2-1. Beck made key stops in the remaining minutes of the half to give the Generals the victory.
A W&L player received a red card at the end of the first half and the Generals played the entire second half a man-down.
Greensboro held a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Beck played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves for the Generals. Senior goalkeeper Jaime Payamps also played the full 90 minutes and made three stops for the Pride.
W&L returns to action in the CNU Soccer Classic on Saturday, when it plays host Christopher Newport at 7:30 pm.
