BALTIMORE, Md. – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) has released the rosters for the 78th USILA Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game, and Washington and Lee will have four players competing in the contest.
Seniors Drew Barnard (Darien, Conn. / Brunswick School), John Broderick (Manhasset, N.Y. / Chaminade), Paul Callahan (San Rafael, Calif. / Marin Catholic) and A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) will all represent the Generals on the South team, which will take on the North this Friday at Tierney Field at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. The Division III game will be played at 5:00 pm, while the Division I/II game will occur at 7:30 pm. Admission is free and the Lax Sports Network will stream both contests.
Barnard has twice been named Third Team All-ODAC as a long-stick midfielder. This spring, he played in 20 contests, tallying two goals, 31 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. He completed his four-year career with five goals and one assist, to go along with 106 ground balls and 65 caused turnovers.
Broderick was a three-time All-ODAC honoree as a defenseman, having earned second team accolades each of the last two years. As a senior, he played in 18 games, starting 16 of them. He totaled two goals, including the game-winner in the 2019 ODAC Championship game. Additionally, he posted 30 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Over his four seasons, Broderick amassed two goals and two assists. He also registered 107 ground balls and 63 caused turnovers.
Callahan earned his first all-conference citation as a senior, garnering first team recognition as a defenseman. He started all 21 games this spring, tallying 43 ground balls, a team-best 21 caused turnovers and one assist. Over his career, Callahan notched 95 ground balls, 56 caused turnovers and one assist.
All told, the three defensive players helped W&L rank first in Division III in man-down defense (.869) and third in scoring defense (6.48 gpg).
An attackman, Witherell was a four-time All-ODAC honoree and the first-ever three-time winner of the ODAC Player of the Year Award. A 2018 USILA First Team All-American, Witherell played in 19 games during the 2019 season, starting each of them. He led the team with 83 points on 46 goals and 37 assists. He also totaled 49 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
Witherell finished his career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 317 points. He also finished first in W&L history in goals scored (191) and second in assists (126). He added 185 ground balls and 47 caused turnovers.
Washington and Lee has had 120 players selected to participate in the North-South Senior All-Star game since 1942. The four players playing in this year's contest marks the most players W&L has had selected to participate in a single-year since 1950.
Washington and Lee completed the 2019 season with a program-record tying 16 wins (16-5). The Generals won the ODAC title and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship, before falling to fourth-ranked York, 14-12.
