SALEM, Va. – The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the second-half to pull away for a 13-8 win over Roanoke on Saturday at Kerr Stadium.
W&L (8-4, 5-0) recovered from a 3-0 deficit in the opening 5:36 of the game to post a 6-5 lead at the intermission.
The Generals came storming out the the break to out-score Roanoke (6-4, 3-1) 4-0 in the third period. Sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) got the decisive run started when he scored off an assist from junior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) at the 9:04 mark. Senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) made it 8-5 when he scored unassisted at 7:27, and junior attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) gave W&L a four-goal lead (9-5) when he scored off an assist from senior midfielder Matt Huber (Great River, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) exactly two minutes later.
Witherell scored unassisted again with 2:22 left in the third, and first-year attackman Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) provided a six-goal lead when he scored unassisted with 9:22 remaining in the game.
The Maroons tacked on two goals in the final 1:23 of the game, but could get no closer than the five-goal final margin.
Washington and Lee held a 43-34 advantage in shots, a 36-17 advantage in ground balls and a 17-7 edge in faceoffs.
Witherell led the way with three goals and one assist, improving his career scoring total to 282 points. He is now nine points away from breaking the school-record (290) held by Matt Dugan '01.
Weaver finished with three goals as well, while Ware had one goal and two assists. Sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) got the win in goal after playing all 90 minutes and posting 13 saves. Junior midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) was again dominant at the Faceoff X, winning 17-of-23 draws.
Senior midfielder Matthew Lintner paced the Maroons with four goals. Senior attackman Peter Lindley, junior attackman Jason Sarro and senior midfielder Daniel Medvetz chipped in one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Ian Davies played the duration in goal and came up with 17 stops.
Washington and Lee returns to action at Ferrum on April 13 at 7:00 pm.
