W&L Men's Lacrosse Drops a Narrow 14-13 Decision to Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Ninth-ranked Denison used a three-goal run in the fourth quarter to eke out a 14-13 win over 12th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Piper Stadium.

The Generals (1-2) trailed 9-4 at halftime after the Big Red (1-0) ended the second quarter with five straight goals, three of which were scored by senior attackman Spencer Butler.  However, W&L notched the first five tallies of the third quarter, scored by five different players, to tie the score (9-9) with 1:11 left in the period.

Denison wrestled the lead back heading into the fourth period, with three goals being scored between the two teams in the final 37 seconds.  Denison carried an 11-10 lead into the fourth after a goal by senior midfielder Owen Armstrong with just two seconds left in the frame.

The Generals assumed their first lead of the game since the first quarter by starting the final period with back-to-back goals.  First, sophomore attackman Austin Hudson (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) scored man-up off a feed from sophomore midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) at the 12:19 mark.  Hamill then fed senior attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) in front of goal for another score at 11:27 for a 12-11 advantage.

Denison then grabbed the lead back for good with their three-goal run over a span of 5:19.  Butler scored his fourth goal of the game with 5:26 left to cap the run and give the Big Red a 14-12 lead.  The Blue & White climbed to within one goal (14-13) on a score by junior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) off an assist from Hamill, but the Big Red forced a turnover on the Generals' final possession and ran out the clock for the victory.

For the game, W&L held advantages of 39-32 in shots, 37-32 in ground balls and 20-10 on faceoffs.

Ware, sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) and senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) all scored two goals for W&L.  Hamill had three assists, while junior attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) and junior midfielder Garrett Cannon (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) notched one goal and one assist each.  Sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal and registered nine saves.

Butler finished with four goals and one assist and junior attackman Peter Pitroff posted one goal and four assists to lead Denison.  Senior midfielder Jake Waxter added three goals and sophomore Reeves McKenney recorded 10 saves in goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Washington College for a 1:00 pm contest.
