LEXINGTON, Va. – The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team couldn't climb out of an 8-0 first-half hole in falling to fifth-ranked York (Pa.) by a score of 10-4 on Saturday at Wilson Field.

Junior attackman Brendan McGrath scored three goals in the first period alone as the Spartans (1-0) raced out to a 5-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.  McGrath had a hand in all three second quarter scores for York, which carried an 8-0 lead into the intermission.  He scored twice in the quarter, and also assisted on a goal by junior attackman Hunter Davis.

The Generals (0-1) opened the second half with a pair of scores to cut it to an 8-2 game with 7:20 left in the third period.  Sophomore attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) got W&L on the board when he scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien).  The Blue & White added a second tally just 2:02 later when sophomore midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) scored man-up off a feed from junior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum).

York got one back before the end of the third period, as junior attackman Thomas Pfeiffer scored a man-up goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Dylan Wolf at the 5:18 mark for a 9-2 lead.  The Generals received goals in the fourth period from Witherell and sophomore midfielder Jed Londrey (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate), but couldn't mount a comeback in falling to the Spartans for a third straight time.

York held a 42-21 advantage in shots and won 25 ground balls, as opposed to 21 for the Generals.  W&L won 10 out of the game's 18 faceoffs.  Witherell finished with one goal and one assist, while first-year goalie Will Atkins (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) posted nine saves for the Generals.  On defense, senior Kyle Gifford (Darien, Conn. / Darien) led the way with three caused turnovers.

McGrath tallied six goals and one assist in the contest.  Pfeiffer added one goal and one assist, and senior Landry Marshall recorded five saves in goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Christopher Newport for a 7:00 pm contest.
