LEXINGTON, Va. – Sixteen different players scored a goal as the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team posted a 26-6 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
With the win, the Generals (10-6) have put themselves in a position to host the ODAC Tournament Semifinals and Finals on May 5-6 should the regular season end in a three-way tie between W&L, Roanoke and Lynchburg. The Hornets finish their regular season this evening against Virginia Wesleyan. A win over the Marlins would ensure all three teams finish at 8-1 and W&L would receive a quarterfinal bye and host the semis and finals based on goal differential between the three teams.
The game with Randolph-Macon was tied 1-1 at the 12:00 mark of the first quarter following a man-up goal from R-MC junior attackman Miles Muncie off an assist from senior midfielder Sam Mayer. However, the Generals blew things open with a 10-goal run that gave them an 11-1 lead with 13:57 left in the second quarter.
Junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) got the run started with a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) at the 6:25 mark of the first quarter, and he scored two more times during the stretch. Sophomore attackman Sam Boxley (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) added one goal and two assists as well.
W&L carried a 14-2 lead into the halftime break and out-scored the Yellow Jackets, 4-2, in the third period to continue to pull away. A number of reserves saw the field in the fourth period and the Generals kept the pressure on, scoring eight goals in the final quarter. Junior attackman Charlie Cory (Afton, Va. / Deerfield Academy) totaled two goals and one assist in the fourth period, while sophomore attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) added two scores.
For the game, the Generals held advantages of 69-17 in shots, 49-20 in ground balls and 29-7 in faceoffs.
Dardani led the W&L scoring barrage with four goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) and first-year midfielder Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) tallied three goals each, while sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) and Cory had two goals and one assist each. Boxley registered one goal and four assists, and sophomore midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) recorded one goal and three assists.
Sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien), junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) and first-year Aidan Long (Concord, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle) all played in goal for W&L, combining to make six saves. First-year midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won 12-of-15 faceoffs to move into a tie for third-place on the school's single-season faceoff wins list with 212 wins. He can move into second with eight more victories. Witherell moved into a tie for fourth-place on the school's single-season scoring list, just three points away from Matt Dugan's '01 record total of 87 points set in 2000.
Muncie paced the Randolph-Macon offense with three goals. Senior attackman Mitch Behl added one goal and one assist. Four different goalkeepers played for the Yellow Jackets, combining for 18 saves.
